Cortisol Pumps Help Reduce Adrenal Crisis

A group of physician researchers from Metro Detroit Endocrinology submitted a paper to the Congress of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists in April, suggesting that insulin pumps could be used to deliver cortisol to patients with severe adrenal insufficiency who do not respond to oral corticosteroids. An article on EndocrinologyAdvisor.com reports back from the conference, and notes that the study showed that cortisol pumps reduce the risk of adrenal crisis by 78.5% compared to oral corticosteroids, and improve the patient’s quality of life.
