In Memoriam: Anja Ries Kjærgaard

AnjaThe PNA is sad to announce the passing of Danish pituitary patient Anja Ries Kjærgaard at the age of 34. She was diagnosed with a prolactinoma and then a sleeping disorder. She took Cabergoline, but believed Ritalin could help her. She fought to get Ritalin prescribed by the Danish health system. She won the right to use it, only to see her sleeping disorder worsen.

Anja passed away in June. Many of Highlight's readers have followed her story, as Anja's letters have appeared anonymously in the "Patient Letters" section of this newsletter several times. The PNA admires Anja's persistence and drive in her fight to achieve good health. We are heartbroken at the outcome and offer our condolences to her family. We hope that by publishing her story, we might shed light on the myriad problems pituitary patients face.  As her case was obviously unusual we do hope her death is evaluated in light of the possibility of mal-practice.
