PNA Patient Conference a Big Success

About 40 patients attended the PNA's California Hormonal and Pituitary Patient Health Symposium, which was held on Saturday January 31st at the Loews Santa Monica Hotel. At the event, patients heard from many of the top pituitary specialists from the Western U.S. and Canada.

Dr. Daniel Kelly made the opening and closing remarks and gave a seminar on endoscopic pituitary surgery. Endocrinologist Dr. Shereen Ezzat, spoke about the definition of clinically significant pituitary disease. Pathologist Dr. Sylvia Asa spoke about the epidemiology of pituitary tumors and gave a presentation about the history of the pituitary. Dr. Pejman Cohan spoke about hormonal issues. Dr. Axelrod spoke about finding the right specialist in the age of the Affordable Care Act. Jessica Diller Kovler covered psychosocial aspects of pituitary disease. And Cushing's activist Sharmyn McGraw taught patients how to be their own best advocate.

The night before the Symposium, the PNA held our Gentle Giant reception and dinner, where Dr. Shereen Ezzat presented Dr. Daniel Kelly with at the PNA's highest honor, the Gentle Giant award. Over 110 people registered for the Award Dinner with about 90 people actually attending the dinner, including PNA staffers Jackie Hubbard, Carol Knudson, Tammy Mazzella and Fran Taylor. The crowd enjoyed a slideshow of Dr. Kelly and some congratulatory videos done by grateful patients of Dr. Kelly. One former patient, Sharmyn McGraw, spoke movingly of Dr. Kelly's impact on her life. Everyone laughed at the skit/roast done by Dr. Griffiths and Dr. Kelly's brother Pat.

The dinner was underwritten largely by not only our corporate or pharmaceutical donors but also from a generous contribution from one of Dr. Kelly's former patients, Ajay Aggarwal, who traveled all the way from India to be treated by one of the best: Dr. Kelly!

The PNA would like to thank everyone involved in the conference and the Gentle Giant Dinner.

The PNA's next patient conference will be at Ohio State in Columbus in April. We hope to see you there!
