Short Description
The Pituitary Unit at OHSU is designed to provide outstanding clinical service in the initial diagnosis and subsequent management of patients with pituitary disorders. The unit brings together decades of accumulated expertise in the clinical, teaching and research realms as they relate to the care of neuroendocrine/pituitary surgery patients.
Description

The OHSU Pituitary Unit is organized so that consulting physicians and patients can effectively access the multiple neuroendocrine resources available at OHSU. Within this context of coordinated clinical care, the Pituitary Unit has four objectives:To provide outstanding clinical care for patients with disorders of the pituitary gland by coordinating the many pituitary disease resources available at OHSU.To educate both patients and physicians on the appropriate diagnosis and management of pituitary tumors and pituitary disease. To make the neuroendocrine resources at OHSU more easily accessible to patients with pituitary disease and their referring physicians. To institute a patient/family support structure allowing the dissemination of knowledge to patients and their families about pituitary disease.Treatment of functional tumors (prolactinomas, Cushing`s disease and acromegaly).Treatment of nonfunctional lesions (adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, meningiomas, gliomas, chordomas, Rathke's cleft cysts,etc.).Treatment of pituitary hormone deficiencies affecting the thyroid, the adrenal glands, water balance, reproductive organs, and growth hormone (GH) secretion.Patients will be thoroughly evaluated for pituitary hormone abnormalities by a pituitary diseases expert (neuroendocrinologist). When appropriate, patients will be evaluated by a neurosurgeon expert in pituitary tumor resection using state-of-the-art "real time" intraoperative MRI.On the same clinic day, patients may also be evaluated by Neuroradiology (MRI scan), Neuro-Ophthalmology (visual field testing), and Neuroendocrine Testing (adrenal function testing).Other specialties including Interventional Neuroradiology, Neuropsychology, Radiation-Oncology and Neuropathology are readily accessible when necessary.Evaluation by a neurosurgeon expert in pituitary tumor resection using state-of-the-art "real time" intraoperative MRI.Resection of large or small functional pituitary tumors including Cushing`s tumors, GH producing tumors (acromegaly) and prolactinomas resistant to medical therapy.Resection of non-functional pituitary lesions (adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, meningiomas, gliomas, chordomas, Rathke's cleft cysts, etc).A dedicated neuroendocrine testing facility for performing dynamic studies.Patient education including: testing protocols, pituitary diseases, pituitary surgery, self-injection training and written educational materials.Dynamic tests include, but are not limited to: cortrosyn stimulation tests, growth hormone stimulation and suppression tests, and CRH stimulation tests.Services are available to OHSU physicians and local and regional referring physicians.Patient monitoring is available for growth hormone initiation and titration.Interpreted test results are provided to the referring physician and to medical records.Administration of endocrine therapy injections.Mailing address:OHSU Northwest Pituitary Centerc/o Dr. Maria FleseriuOregon Health & Science UniversityMail code BTE4723181 S.W.
